The Escondido Public Library invites the community to help develop a dynamic new vision for the Library’s future by attending public meetings on April 27, 30, and May 1.
Escondido Public Library has been a vital part of the community’s educational, cultural, and economic development for more than a century. The current library building, located downtown, can no longer accommodate the materials, services, and technology to support the community’s 21st century needs. Studies over the past five years have confirmed the need for an expanded library and City Council recently approved the initiation of a conceptual design study to reorganize the current building and add a new state-of-the-art wing.
Broad-based community input and ideas will be essential to making the project a success. Community members are invited to participate in any or all of the following opportunities to learn about the library conceptual design project and provide input. Community Meetings will be held on the...

Literacy and Lifelong Learning’s FFL will host a spring program, Playing It Strong! Goes Into the Wild! This program is from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM on Thursdays, April 25th, May 2nd; and 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Playing It Strong! Goes into the Wild! is a continuation of FFL’s winter program, where families and their children in grades 3rd to 6th identified their talents and strengths. Now, children will be connecting their knowledge from the 1st module of Playing It Strong!, while learning about animals.
Parents and their 3rd to 6th graders will attend three meetings. In the first two meetings they will learn about animal traits and characteristics. Through interactive activities they will learn that like humans, animals have traits and characteristics that make them unique. Children will also do a special project on an animal they think most resembles their own personality and talents.
Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s bilingual book discussion group, will meet on Saturday, April 27th from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in the library’s Board Room. The Escondido Public Library is located in downtown Escondido at 239 South Kalmia Street.“La breve y maravillosa vida de Oscar Wao” / “Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao” by Junot Diaz is the selected book for this month. Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd who dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the fuku – the curse that has haunted his family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still waiting for his first kiss, is just its most recent victim. We are immersed in the tumultuous life of Oscar and his family history, rendered with genuine warmth and humor, and insight into the...

The Escondido Public Library is located in downtown Escondido at 239 South Kalmia Street. The selected book for this month is the Pulitzer Prize winner La Carretera / The Road by Cormac McCarthy. This apocalyptic vision is narrated by a nameless man who is one of the few survivors of an unspecified civilization-ending catastrophe. He and his young son are trekking along a treacherous highway, starving and freezing, trying to avoid roving cannibal armies. The tale, and their lives, is saved from teetering over the edge of bleakness thanks to the man’s fierce belief that they are “the good guys” who are preserving the light of humanity. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world...
