Daley Ranch Naturalist Hikes

All hikes begin at the Daley Ranch entrance on La Honda Drive unless otherwise noted. Hike location directions given below. A shuttle runs on Sundays with handicap accessibility. Bring water, sun hat, sunscreen, and proper hiking boots or treaded footwear. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Please do not leave valuables in your car. Steady rain cancels the hike.

PLEASE NOTE: Drinking water is no longer available at Daley Ranch.

Daley Ranch Naturalist Hikes

Friday, July 30, 6:00 a.m., “Mystery Walk”
Join Naturalist Kathleen Flanagan’s early morning hike to explore the results of our winter rains at Daley Ranch on a 3-hour, 7-mile walk on various trails. Meet at the La Honda Drive parking lot. There will be a lot of map reading on the hikes so be sure to have your glasses if you wear them. We recommend you bring a minimum of two liters of water and wear layered clothing as it will be cool in the mornings and warmer as the hike continues.

Friday, August 6, 6:00 a.m., “Mystery Walk”

Saturday, August 7, 7:30 a.m., “Snakes, and Shakes”
Naturalist Jack Pomeroy will lead this 4 mile, moderately paced hike leaving from the La Honda Drive Parking Lot and use the Boulder Loop and Rock Ridge Trails. He will discuss what the recent earthquakes mean to us and how to identify poisonous snakes.

Friday, August 13, 6:00 p.m., “Perseid Meteor Shower”
Naturalist Dorothy Klitzing invites you to come on this moderately easy 2+ mile hike covering Boulder Loop and Ranch House Road. This late evening hike will be to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower. We will be returning to the cars around 10 p.m. so you will want to bring a flashlight and a jacket as well as water and snacks for the evening. Please call 760-839-4241 and leave your name, number in your group, and phone number to register.

Saturday, August 14, 8:00 a.m., More Walk, Less Talk”
Naturalist Simone Green will lead this hike around the Ranch. This moderately brisk hike will cover about 5 miles and last about 2 hours.

Sunday, August 15, 9:00 a.m., “Daley Ranch Scenery”
A diverse plant population and expansive views are waiting to be enjoyed on Naturalist Rick Paul’s occasionally strenuous 4-mile hike, leaving from Cougar Pass. Be sure to ask Rick about the Daley Ranch keepsake! MEET AT COUGAR PASS PARKING LOT. Cougar Pass Trailhead—From Interstate 15, take the El Norte Parkway exit in Escondido east about a half mile to Broadway. Take Broadway north four miles to Cougar Pass (dirt road), turn right, and drive one mile. Park in the asphalt lot on the left.

Friday, August 20, 6:00 a.m., “Mystery Walk”

Saturday, August 21, 7:00 a.m. “Early Birds, Bugs ‘N Botany”
Join Naturalists Lee Dezan and James Dillane on a slower paced hike of 3-4 miles on moderate trails, lasting 3-3.5 hours. Trails will be determined by the makeup of the group. Hikers should have two liters of water and wear sunscreen, treaded footwear, and a wide brimmed hat. Expect high temperatures by mid-morning. Rain never cancels.

Sunday, August 29, 9:00 a.m. “Walk in the Park”
Come join Naturalist Dan Cannon on a moderately paced new walk through the south east section of Daley Ranch to Stanley Peak. You will learn about Daley’s flora and fauna residents, the reserve’s recent and ancient history, and have a short course (5 minute) in geology. There will be several rest stops along the way.

PLEASE NOTE: Trail Maintenance has been cancelled for the hot summer months. We will resume our trail maintenance program with the Rangers in October.


Directions to Hike Locations

La Honda Trailhead—From Interstate 15, take the El Norte Parkway exit in Escondido east four miles to La Honda Drive. Turn left. Drive one mile. Park in dirt lot on left.

Cougar Pass Trailhead—From Interstate 15, take the El Norte Parkway exit in Escondido east about ½ mile to Broadway. Take Broadway north four miles to Cougar Pass (dirt road). Turn right. Drive one mile. Park in asphalt lot on left.

Caballo Trailhead—From Interstate 15, take Valley Parkway exit in Escondido about 5 miles northeast (second traffic light at Bevin from corner of Washington and Valley). Turn left at Eureka Springs development or next left at Mayflower Dog Park. Follow road to filtration plant entrance and turn right at Escondido Humane Society sign. Park in dirt parking lot.
