The first people in the area were the Kumeyaay and Luiseño Indians.

The Kumeyaay Indians lived in the San Pasqual Valley and along the San Dieguito River. The Luiseño Indians lived in villages and campsites along the Escondido Creek.

This picture shows metates and morteros, which are holes ground into boulder tops. These were used by the women of the tribes to grind seeds and acorns.
