The first school to open in Escondido was near Rock Springs Road. As Escondido's population increased, more children needed schooling. A larger school was built in 1886 called the Lime Street Grammar School. It was located where Grape Day Park is today.

This picture shows a country school. These were for the children who lived on ranches that were too far away to go to the town schools.
